I recently had the pleasure of visiting The Holcombe Inn located in the village of Holcombe, just 30 minutes from Bath. I was invited to try their NEW quintessentially English afternoon tea. This 17th century country retreat is surrounded by lush green rolling fields and offers both award-winning dining and 5-star accommodation to guests. It is an idyllic location for some pub grub or afternoon treat and we felt instantly relaxed as soon as we arrived.

  • We will be going back with our little pup Woody as they have some great dog-friendly lodges with countryside views.

So, the afternoon tea!

After a hectic morning getting our new 3-month-old puppy settled, (this was our second trip out leaving the little pooch at home) we needed time to chill out, relax and take our minds off worrying about him back at home, so it was lovely to be led to this beautifully laid table, reserved just for us. (FYI: don’t get us wrong, we love our pooch Woody but his pawrents needed TIME OUT – puppies are exhausting haha).

We sat down at this elegant table placed with pretty Victorian teacups and plates and were served a GIGANTIC pot of tea (great size), and a glass of fizz (for Rob only, as I was driving).

We sat in the tranquillity garden (an adult only space) which is full of beautiful flower beds and colourful vegetable patches – what better place to enjoy afternoon tea than in a tranquil, peaceful garden in the middle of the countryside.

Then the food arrived! Three levels of sweet treats and a plate of delicious sandwiches! Is your mouth-watering? (Not for him… the food 😉 hehe!)

The sandwiches were some of the classics – salmon and cream cheese, cheese and chutney, and ham and mustard. Cut in triangles with the crusts off, I felt like I was back at my Grans house for lunch – pure nostalgic comfort food.

Authentic high tea

Level 1 – moreish freshly baked scones. They make look thinner than usual but I actually preferred this – not too filling and not as doughy, making the jam, cream and scone ratio absolutely perfect!

What do you put on first? Cream or jam?

I couldn’t remember which I prefer

Up to level 2 – peanut butter flapjacks and eclairs topped with chocolate ganache, sugared pistachio and cherry.

DING! Arrived on level 3 – chocolate mousse with shortbread biscuit base, raspberry/lemon mousse with shortbread biscuit base and delicious macaroons!

The only request/changes I would make is to add one more sandwich to the savoury selection. It may be just me but I am a sweet/savoury/sweet person, so sometimes after a few sweet treats I save a sandwich until the end. Also, maybe have the sandwiches on a selection of different breads.

But overall I found this afternoon tea an absolute delight to eat. I can’t even decide what was my favourite bite was, out of the sandwiches and sweet treats, they were all YUM, YUM, YUUUUM! Although we did end up buying some peanut flapjacks to take home, so maybe they are the favourite (even asked them for the recipe, they were that good!)

I would truly recommend this mouth-watering afternoon tea, I may have been gifted and invited to review this experience but I would 100% go back. We couldn’t stop talking about it for the rest of the day and I think it’s a fantastic price (£17.95) for an afternoon tea – a lot better than even some pricey afternoon teas I’ve had.

So, why not book yourself in to enjoy this alfresco afternoon tea experience – Bank Holiday weekend is just around the corner, perfect time to treat yourself.

– This afternoon tea is available for the next few weeks so if you want to treat yourself or a loved one, I would recommend booking in for afternoon tea.
